SEMINÁRIO EXTRAORDINÁRIO DA LICENCIATURA

03/06/2011

Science Education in turbulent times

Prof. Kenneth Tobin

The Graduate Center, City University of New York

ABSTRACT: There is widespread international dissatisfaction with numerous aspects of science education. These include lack of relevance of school science to everyday life and incongruencies between school curricula, science assessments and the knowledge needed for productive lives as citizens of a world that can and should be transformed to be transnational, equitable, sustainable, and collaborative. New roles for all participants are desirable, including learners, teachers, school leaders, teacher educators, policymakers, and researchers. The institutions involved in science education also are in need of transformation. In an endeavor to catalyze what I consider to be essential changes, I propose a framework for science education that is sociocultural and includes alternative epistemologies, ontologies, and axiologies.  The interactive seminar will challenge those in attendance to consider how their personal standpoints or pertaining to science education can change to support a new vision of science education that is successful in producing better lives for global citizens of a sustainable planet Earth.
